St Helena Island Social Day

The Watercolour Society of Queensland will be having a social day at St Helena Island. Includes morning tea, delicious lunch and guided tour.

To start with you will board the Cat O’ Nine Tails Cruisers from Northshore Hamilton Pontoon is at 9:00 am. They are returning approximately 3:00 pm.

Of course, St Helena Island forms part of the Moreton Bay and Pumicestone Passage. Specifically, it is 5 km from the mouth of the Brisbane River and about 8km north-east of Manly.

Historic Snapshot

This picturesque Island has a turbulent history. Such as the site of Queensland’s first penal settlement. Consequently, its most significant period was when it functioned as a high-security colonial prison from 1867. For more than 60 years, St Helena was the place of imprisonment for hundreds of outcasts. The Island is now heritage listed and is a National Park.

Guided Tour

We will be guided on a historical adventure of the Island. From the Aboriginal beginnings to the Nineteenth Century prison Settlement. With its sometimes sad but often funny stories.
